Before you sign up

Use an email address you do not use anywhere else, and make sure that email account itself has a hardware key or authenticator app on it. Almost every exchange account compromise starts with the email, not the exchange.

  • A dedicated email address for financial accounts
  • A password manager, with a unique password for the exchange
  • An authenticator app or hardware key ready before you deposit anything

Identity verification

Any exchange with real fiat rails will require identity verification: a government ID, a selfie, and often a proof of address dated within the last three months. Approval ranges from a few minutes to a couple of business days.

Verify before you need to, not while you are trying to make a time-sensitive transfer. Use the exact name and address that appear on your bank account, because a mismatch is the usual cause of a rejected deposit.

Secure the account before you fund it

Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app or hardware key rather than SMS, which is vulnerable to SIM swapping. Set an anti-phishing code if the exchange offers one, so genuine emails are identifiable. Add a withdrawal address allowlist with a time lock if available.

Make a round trip with a small amount first

Deposit a small sum, buy something, and withdraw it — both back to your bank and out to a wallet you control. You will learn the real timings and the real costs, and you will find out whether anything about your account triggers a review, while the stakes are trivially small.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a crypto exchange without ID verification?

Some offshore venues allow limited functionality with restricted withdrawal limits before verification, but anything involving fiat requires it. Unverified accounts also tend to be the first frozen during a compliance review.

How long does verification take?

Usually minutes to a few hours on the major exchanges, occasionally a couple of business days if a document needs manual review.
